Questions for Scotia: “Young Ladies Starting Makeup”

Questions For Scotia: this month’s question for me was from Nikki.
“how do you go about introducing makeup and skin care to a 13 year old?”

yGreat question because as we know from so many studies and documentaries like “Killing Us Softly”, that the media starts early and hits hard at our young women with the massive media presented image of “WHAT YOU NEED TO LOOK LIKE”. Which to all us grown ups shake our heads, and shed a tear for all the pain we know our young ones will go through and for some, may never get past.

I will give you my last answer first: the best is always take them to someone who is a professional: a makeup artist at a store or spa, an esthetician, or a hair stylist. They can point you in the right direction for answers.
But now I can in detail answer you.

Product Review: Colour Changing Lipstick

The other night I finally got to try it: Frog Prince lipstick!

My bff has been talking about this lipstick for months and I wanted to try it so badly. It is a colour changing lipstick that is unique to your own skin.

It’s a neat idea that your lipstick could show the inner you for a unique colour but is it really ph and that unique or is it like mood rings that just change with heat?

Makeup Review: Maybelline Elixir

As a makeup artist I am always asked 100 questions a day about different brands, products that I like or don’t like. Sometimes friends get freebies and throw me a few samples from different places.

This sometime was the freebie of a  Maybelline “The elixir” lip gloss.

my quick review: Gross.

My long review: Gross… before I even put it on my lips I could smell the parfume that is in this product. The smell wafted from the lid akin to me being rushed through at least 100 nursing homes at the speed of light… or in this case scent.

like the smelloscope from Futurama

Now there are very few times that I think makeup smells gross. I usually like the smells or they are pretty-scentless.

The brush is on a angle that works well for bottom lips but pokes you in the top.

For the few moments that I could stand it being on my hand as a test: its staying power isn’t great.

I would say don’t waste your money on this product it’s a fail.

Product Knowledge: Talcum Powder

I know we all know the main use for talcum powder aka baby powder : to keep wet/sweaty areas dry.   But googling quickly can get scary,  what is it made up of and how did it become such a common house hold beauty product?

Product Knowledge: Gycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid is known for exfoliating skin, improving texture and revealing a fresh, smooth, more youthful complexion.

But aren’t products with Glycolic acid only to be used by dermatologists and highly trained estheticians? Don’t they just acid burn off your face and if you mess up you will look like two-face?

No and yes… it all depends on the percentage and pH levels of the glycolic acid in your products and who is using the products.  And don’t worry this kind of acid isn’t the same kind from Batman.

Questions for Scotia: Vegan Hyaluronic Acid?

I have been asked this question a few times about my new Hydrating line from DermaE that uses Hyaluronic Acid.

“How Can Hyaluronic Acid be vegan? I know it comes from rooster cones. How did this company get certified vegan?”

HA hydrating

Hyaluronic acid is derived from 2 different sources: yes rooster cones (their little red mohawks) and from fermented grass yeast.  But why would it even bother coming from animal byproduct if you can get it from fermented grass yeast?

Cosmetic Scare Words : Parabens

This morning whilst having a shower, I looked at the back of my body wash and saw in big purple letters: Paraben free.

I know that I talk alot about products that have parabens, antioxidants, organic, and that are gluten free and cruelty free.

I explained anti oxidants in my post “Summer Sensitive Skin”. I went through other toxins like formaldehyde and toulene in my post about ZOYA nail polish and we all know what cruelty free is.  I haven’t gotten into parabens but they are something that is a scare word now in the world of cosmetics but why? When it comes to the chemistry of our makeup and skin care, what are the tiny differences to our body as a whole?

So what are they?

Makeup Hacks Fails

I keep getting questions about these makeups hacks online that everyone is trying. I don’t usually bother with makeup hacks, because they are usually “cheap” out routes that I as a professional don’t need to take.

Sometimes experiments are fun, some of these hacks that I have looked up are from the depression, the ancient art of makeup or from WWII. To me these aren’t “hacks” they are from hard times and before we had primers, moisturizers, and many different products.

If you really want to go find bugs, ground up their exoskeletons and blend with honey for bright lipstick: have fun. I’ll be at Sephora.
